Prempro

Prempro (known generically as conjugated estrogens and medroxyprogesterone) is a prescription hormone replacement therapy (HRT) drug made by Wyeth, Inc. Prempro is used to treat menopause symptoms such as hot flashes and is also used to prevent osteoporosis.

A clinical trial of Prempro showed that women who took the medication were at a significantly increased risk of invasive breast cancer, stroke, pulmonary embolism, and coronary heart disease when compared with women who took a placebo.

The study was conducted by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and was meant to continue until 2005, but was stopped on July 9, 2002 when the increased risk of breast cancer became apparent to the Data and Safety Monitoring Board.

The study involved 16,608 women aged 50 to 79 who had not had a hysterectomy. Prempro was the only estrogen/progestin combination drug included in the trial. The participants in the study were followed-up for an average of 5.2 years.

Prempro is listed as FDA pregnancy category X meaning that the medication can cause birth defects. It can also pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby.

If you are pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant, or nursing do not take Prempro.

It is important to keep in regular contact with your doctor (every three to six months) if you are taking Prempro, especially if you may be taking Prempro long-term. If you have any concerns regarding your use of Prempro and the risk of side effects, speak to your doctor to discuss your options.
