Welding Rods

Welding rods have been linked to serious health risks including Parkinson's disease, lung disease, and neurological damage. The problem is with toxic fumes that are released when welders strike arcs. Welders inhale the fumes that are generated when steel is hit or cut, putting their health at risk.

Among the gases and toxins that are released during welding are nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, manganese (has the greatest potential to cause harm), copper, cadmium, and fluorine. Activities that release those substances into the air include metal inert gas (MIG) welding, tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding, shielded metal arc welding, brazing, metal pouring, thermal cutting, and gouging.

Manganese is found in stainless steel, carbon steel, and in welding rods and has been linked to early onset Parkinson's disease and Manganism. Parkinson's disease is a neurological disorder whose symptoms include tremors, disorientation, fatigue, headaches, muscle cramps, memory loss, apathy, insomnia, speech disturbances, anxiety, impairment of judgment, hallucinations, delusions, stiffness in arms and legs, loss of muscular control and loss of appetite.

In addition to Parkinson's disease, exposure to welding-related substances also increases risks of pneumonitis, bronchitis, and lung disease.

A recent welding product lawsuit saw a jury award $1 million to a man who claimed his Parkinson's disease was caused by exposure to welding fumes. Lawyers argued that the company that manufactured the welding rods did not warn people of the risks associated with working with the rods.
